Recently Papa got pictures developed that he has taken over a long time. I saw pictures of us from when I was much smaller…just 4 months old. Now that I am almost 9 months old, I figure I must be getting old because when I look back on things I did in the past, it seems like a really long time ago. I mean, wow, who can remember that far back!?

Papa says that is when I first started to reach for things…and what I was reaching for was the spring leaves just emerging from the trees in the Rich Mountain wilderness area in North Georgia.

On that trip we also played in the stream – and that was great!!! I got into the water, played with Mama in the water, and took some good naps there.

This weekend, we traveled to the Asheville area in the Appalachian mountains. The mountains are rollingAlon and Mom and lovely places, still covered in a thick carpet of forests in most areas that receive a lot of rain. I got to meet lots of people on this trip as we went to a couple good parties, including one with hundreds of people! Mom got me dressed in red-white-and-blue and I got a lot of attention (there were hundreds of people there!). Dad helped light fireworks for an impressive showing, though I don’t understand why you all get so excited about those loud things…that was after bed time. One of the highlights of the parties was pizza making – hundreds of people made pizzas that got fired in the wood stove in the hillside (there was a monstrous blob of dough!). I gnawed on the pizza dough and most anything else I could convince Mom and Dad to give me!

I was born in a time when lots of things shape how we live and the impact we have on the environment. A child that is lucky like me and born in the US will consume over 300 times as much stuff as a baby born in Ethiopia (86 metric tons of waste generated per person per year in the United States, read more). Yes, in this country each person contributes about 10,500 times my weight in waste every year! If the whole world lived like the average American, we would need 4 Earths to provide all the resources! Obviously that’s not possible since we have just one Earth. That’s had an impact on the way people live, the life choices they make and even fashion. I like to think of myself as a cute messenger of some of those messages :)

So it’s time to grab those canvas bags, start composting the kitchen waste and biking instead of driving. Green is the new black!
